say a lil prayer
So…its been quite the weekend. We discovered that Moochie was walking a little funny, limping a bit – but we figured he just banged his leg jumping on the bed or something. On Saturday night / Sunday morning, it got worse. He was barely able to walk and was just dragging himself around. So we took him to an emergency vet clinic in Toronto, figuring that it was easily fixable. It turns out that he was in a stage 3 form of Canine Intervertebral Disc Disease. This means pretty much that the soft material between the vertebrae builds up, hardens, then explodes up into the spinal canal. This squishes the nerves which causes pain and disables the hind legs. We didn’t really have any options but to either leave him at ICU in Toronto or drive up to Guelph and get him seen by a neurologist and have surgery. We chose to drive him up right away, seeing as his legs were only getting worse. By this time he was collapsing every time he tried to walk.
Seeing him so helpless was just heartbreaking. I kept thinking if I had contributed to this, or what I could have done differently. Like, is this karma for something I did? I don’t get it. After everything that happened with Coco this past summer, I can’t even think of how it would feel to lose Moochie too. He’s never been alone before, and he’s probably scared to death.
Apparently, most surgery patients recover well, about 80-85% live a normal life afterwards. So I’m praying for the best. We had to leave him in ICU last night, just so he could be monitored and be fed thru IV since he wasn’t eating or drinking anything. He’s scheduled for surgery tomorrow and after that he will be in ICU for a few more days. The vets say that he will not be able to walk or run around for almost 2 months after. So…please say a little prayer for moochie – I need him to pull through.

Always so heartbreaking to hear about animals in distress.
I’m sure he’ll be ok.
Try not to think about it in terms of karma though. It was already meant to be whether you pampered him or not. Hope this helps ya.

Try not to worry too much Steph, the people at Guelp are the best the world has to offer and know exactly what to do and how to do it. He will recover and be back to his springy little self before you know it. Just be there for him like always and he will pull through.
